So I recently got my hands on DJ Hero over the weekend and I was surprisingly pleased with what FreeStyleGames has created. The games presentation is very nice overall and the gameplay is very fun. I know most people who are frequent rhythm game players kind of shunned DJ Hero initially because they may have thought it was ripping off Konami's Beatmania series, but DJ Hero is for the most part very different.

The gameplay is solid and the learning curve isn't bad at all. If you've played a few rhythm games before you'll be able to hop right in and start playing. I started off on Medium and after about forty-five minutes I had already jumped up to Expert. Now, just because I jumped to Expert doesn't mean I'm actually very good at Expert mode. The thing about DJ Hero is that you can't really fail-out of a song. Each time you play a track you will play through its entirety. This helps the fact that the game doesn't really have a practice mode to speak of. You're still scored though and your completion of each song is tracked by a percentage/score.

The song list for the game is very diverse in what it provides for your mixing pleasure. Each "track" is a mash-up between two songs and these mash-ups have been specially made for DJ Hero alone. You won't be hearing these mixes anywhere else. If you like Hip-Hop, Dance, Electronic, Rap, or Rock you will find at least a few tracks you can enjoy. I'm not a huge fan of Rap and Hip-Hop, but the mixes within DJ Hero are great to listen to and play. Daft Punk's presence within the game has certainly made it a great experience for me.

There is already some DLC available for DJ Hero and the team at FreeStyleGames plans to release more on a regular schedule. This means the track list will grow and the opportunity for an even more diverse selection of music is present.

Overall I'm really looking forward to playing more DJ Hero and am hoping to pick it up at some point.

First sign of the apocalypse- Phil likes an Activision game.

I played the demo of it at a Toys'r'us a few weeks back and I definitely thought it was interesting and worth a second try. After a 2nd song, my fingers began to hurt, but maybe that's to blame on the demo stand being low and on a slant so that children could play.

Luckily, they had a guitar attached to the demo as well, and it was really cool to be able to co-op with my brother. Sure its just another excuse to use the guitar on some other game, but it worked enough for me to like it.

Maybe you should bring it in sometime and we can all try it out.

-Whoa…when did we get sigs?

We'll be getting it in the labs for next quarter and I probably won't be getting it till around Christmas. I played it at an Anime Con last Saturday.

I haven't heard much about it, but it sounds like a lot of fun. I definately want to get my hands on it and try it out before I spend the money for the equipment though. I had my doubts because it seemed like they were trying to milk the most out of the "Hero" series, but I'm definately into electronica, and though I've never gotten the money together to DJ myself, I've always liked Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Thanks for the review!
